Where the name comes from and what it means
Many young fans ask what "Knabenturnier" means. Our tournament is about football for players younger than 13 years. What connection exists to the old fashioned word "Knabe" known from the german poem "Sah ein Knab ein Röslein stehn"?
The structure of the GDR-football system is to blame: Back then sports were catagorised by fixed terms. Nowadays football teams are listed in alphabetical order. The age group "Knabe" corresponds to the now known as age group "D-Youth". That is why a D-youth-tournament was called "Knabenturnier" in 1966. Today the name of our Tournament is a USP.
